LAN 12: Madison County

  • Basic Facts About The C & A LAN #12

Madison County's Child and Adolescent Local Area Network, often  referred to as the "C&A LAN", is one of 62 Illinois groups which was organized to encourage local planning for child abuse prevention.  It is a group of organizations and concerned citizens who work together to help children and families, especially families at high risk for child abuse.

Although a relatively new organization, already more than a quarter of a million dollars has been allocated to community projects that support the C&A LAN goals plus an annual allocation for the WRAP Around services.

Each year plans and goals are set to organize and prioritize the group's efforts.  Services are focused on the following high risk factors for child abuse and neglect.  They include families with:

  • Teen pregnancy or teen parent

  • Parent abused or neglected as a child

  • Mentally ill or emotionally disturbed parent

  • A history of domestic violence

  • A child who has special needs

  • An infant or toddler: Younger children are most at risk

  • Parent experiencing social isolation or low self-esteem

  • Alcohol or drug abuse

  • A lack of knowledge of child development: unrealistic expectations, harsh discipline

  • Poor employment status and education

  • Environmental living conditions that could lead to neglect (no heat, inadequate food, shelter, clothing, etc.)

  • Families in poverty or poor neighborhood

  • Conditions like violence

  • Prior allegation of abuse or neglect

  • Prior investigation for abuse or neglect where no finding of abuse or neglect was made

Most of the work actually goes on within committees.  The whole group or the "steering committee" meets monthly to hear reports from each committee and from projects funded by the C&A LAN.  All participants who are a part of a working committee may vote at the LAN meeting.

To be part of the LAN, just come to a steering meeting and let the conveners know you want to participate. These meetings are currently being held the 1st Tuesday of each month at Community Counseling Center, 2615 Edwards Street, Alton.  For meeting times and details, call 462-4883, extension 224.  For directions, contact 462-2331.
