Family
Centered Services Resource Directory - November
2001
The C & A LAN 82 or Local Area Network is
organizations which provide services to children/adolescents and their families
in the Chicago communities of South Shore, Avalon, Chatham, Greater Grand
Crossing and Burnside.
What
is C & A LAN and what is its purpose?
The
Child and Adolescent Area Network (C & A LAN) was created out of a challenge
to reform the mental health systems of Illinois. Illinois School Board of
Education, Department of Mental Health, Department of Disabilities, Department
of Substance Abuse and the Department Children and Family Services have joined
together in a commitment to support LAN's as a system to maintain children in
their communities. The intent for the LAN's structure is a local system,
which has the flexibility to deliver services quickly and which is based upon
the individual need and strengths of children and families. A common
value, shared by the state agencies, supports the wraparound philosophy of
unconditional care that allows children with emotional/behavioral disabilities
to receive services they need without leaving their schools or communities.

82 Family Centered Services
The LAN 82 Family Center Services Initiative is a
compilation of three (3) separate programs whose primary focus has been to
assist families in an effort to reduce stressors and negative situations
in their lives that have in the past lead to child abuse/and or neglect.
LAN 82 is a geographically defined area, as well as a Community Based Program,
which provides a platform for collaborative planning. LAN 82 has a
voluntary, inclusive membership of child welfare and community stakeholders
residing within the LAN. LAN 82 works with the Department of Children and
Family Services to plan, develop, and deliver a contractually linked array of
services to meet the safety and protection needs of children and families.
The programs are:
Family Advocacy is designed to assist
families in learning effective parenting skills and stress management.
In addition, the Family Advocate ensures that families are connected to the
appropriate services within the community or outside the community.
After School Program exposes children to
tutoring sessions, arts and crafts, and field trips to expose children to
areas outside of their communities. This program is being offered to
students at Madison Elementary and South High School.
Job Training Program will assist youth
and adults in developing interviewing skills and locating open jobs.
Adoption and Time Limited Reunification
assistance is offered to families who have adopted, are in the process of
adopting or thinking about adopting. Services are also offered to
families who are in the process of being reunified.
Resource Coordinator assists youth and
adults in finding support services within the boundaries of their LAN.
Families living within the boundaries of LAN
82 are eligible to receive services from Family Centered Programs.
